MTG Sets in Order of Release (With Set Symbols), 1993 to 2027

Magic: The Gathering began with Limited Edition Alpha on August 5, 1993, and Scryfall lists 120 expansion sets from Arabian Nights that December through Star Trek on Friday, November 13, 2026, with Marvel: Darkhold Destiny next on Friday, April 9, 2027, and every one is listed in release order below with its set code.

Last updated: Monday, November 2, 2026. Set names, codes and release dates are from Scryfall’s set index, cross-checked against Wizards of the Coast’s set listings, read on that date. Dates are Scryfall’s release dates, which can differ by a day from a prerelease or regional date.

For what is coming next, keep our Magic: The Gathering release calendar bookmarked, check which sets leave Standard on our MTG Standard rotation page, and see the Commander sets in context on our Commander Brackets page.

What was the first MTG set, and what is the newest one?

The first Magic set was Limited Edition Alpha, released August 5, 1993, and the newest released expansion set is Reality Fracture, released October 2, 2026. The next expansion sets are Star Trek on Friday, November 13, 2026 and Marvel: Darkhold Destiny on Friday, April 9, 2027, both listed by Scryfall as upcoming releases as of November 2, 2026.

What are all the MTG expansion sets in order of release?

There are 120 expansion sets in Scryfall’s index, listed oldest first below. Each set has its own set symbol printed on its cards, and the set code in the middle column is the short code for that set and its symbol: modern cards print the code at the bottom of the card, and databases such as Scryfall file every card under it.

Two entries need a note. Time Spiral Timeshifted is Scryfall’s separate listing for the 121 timeshifted bonus cards inside Time Spiral, which is why both rows carry the same October 6, 2006 date. Through the Omenpaths is the digital Arena release listed by Scryfall alongside the paper sets.

What are the MTG core sets in order of release?

The core sets are Magic’s baseline sets, listed oldest first below. The early core sets carried no set symbol at all: core sets only gained symbols with Classic Sixth Edition in 1999, while expansion sets had used them from the start.

Core set Set code Release date
Limited Edition Alpha LEA August 5, 1993

Foundations FDN November 15, 2024

Foundations, released November 15, 2024, is the current baseline set in this line. Foreign and special printings of the early core sets, such as Foreign Black Border, are separate Scryfall listings and are not repeated here.

How do MTG set symbols work, and what do the colors mean?

A set symbol is the small icon on the right side of a card’s type line, and it tells you which set that printing belongs to. A card reprinted in a new set takes the new set’s symbol, not the symbol from its first printing.

Symbol color Rarity Since when
Black or white Common, or a basic land Color coding began with Exodus in 1998
Silver Uncommon Exodus, 1998
Gold Rare Exodus, 1998
Red-orange Mythic rare Shards of Alara, 2008, which introduced mythic rarity
Purple Special, the Time Spiral timeshifted cards Time Spiral, 2006

Before Exodus, every expansion symbol was printed in black regardless of rarity, so the symbol color on a pre-1998 card tells you nothing about its rarity and the card has to be looked up in a database such as Scryfall or Gatherer instead.

Which MTG sets are not in these tables?

Commander sets, Masters reprint sets, draft innovation sets such as Conspiracy and Battlebond, Secret Lair drops and promo and token listings are separate set types in Scryfall’s index and are not in the two tables above, which cover the expansion and core sets only. That is a scope choice, not a missing row: Scryfall’s full set index lists every type together, and our Secret Lair hub tracks the drops separately.

Frequently asked questions

How many MTG sets are there?
Scryfall’s index listed 120 expansion sets and 25 core set listings as of November 2, 2026, plus hundreds of Commander, Masters, promo, token and other special listings. The two tables on this page cover the 120 expansion sets and the 22 main English core sets.

What is the oldest MTG set?
Limited Edition Alpha, released August 5, 1993. Limited Edition Beta followed on October 4, 1993 and Unlimited Edition on December 1, 1993, and the first expansion set, Arabian Nights, closed the year on December 17, 1993.

Does the set symbol decide whether a card is legal?
No. The symbol has no effect on gameplay and does not decide legality: if a card is legal in a format, any printing of that card with the same name is legal in that format.

Where can I see each set symbol?
Scryfall’s set index shows every set’s symbol next to its name and code, and Wizards of the Coast keeps its own full list in the Card Set Archive on the Magic website.
