When does Tapestry: Age of Conquest release?

It releases on Friday, December 4, 2026. Chaosium announced the game at Chaosium Con EU in Gdansk, Poland, in a press release dated Thursday, October 29, 2026. Attendees at the British Museum Games Night on December 4 will receive a copy, and the book goes into general release the same day at chaosium.com. Chaosium says details for the games night event are forthcoming.

What is the game about?

Players work through the events shown in the Bayeux Tapestry, the famous embroidered cloth that depicts the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Through three linked scenarios, they experience the rise and fall of Harold Godwinson, culminating in the Battle of Hastings in 1066, where William of Normandy led the Norman army to victory over the English.

Chaosium developed the game in association with The British Museum and the University of Edinburgh’s History and Games Lab. The game was commissioned to commemorate the Bayeux Tapestry’s loan to The British Museum, where it is on display from September 2026 to July 2027. Chaosium says this is the first time in more than 900 years the tapestry has been on English soil.

How does it play?

The 76 page book contains game rules based on Chaosium’s Basic Roleplaying System. Chaosium describes the rules as easy to learn and designed for quick play with little to no preparation. The book also includes ready to play characters alongside its three linked adventures.

Writer Jason Durall said historical accuracy was a paramount concern, but the tapestry itself was the primary source: where the historical record and the tapestry differed, the tapestry’s depiction guided the game. Dr Gianluca Raccagni, one of the project’s historical consultants, said that approach lets players interact with and immerse themselves in the events of 1066 through the tapestry.
