New York Comic Con 2026 delivered one of the biggest Magic: The Gathering announcements of the year: Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, a full Universes Beyond set arriving April 7, 2027. What makes this reveal genuinely historic is the approach: this is the first Universes Beyond set built around an original story and setting rather than adapting existing Marvel material.
An Original Story, Not an Adaptation
Every Universes Beyond release so far has translated existing worlds onto cards. Darkhold Destiny breaks that mold: Wizards of the Coast and Marvel built a bespoke narrative spanning nearly 30 dimensions, centered on Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela, and Dormammu. For MTG players, that means cards drawn from a story designed from the ground up for the game, and for Marvel fans, a genuinely new chapter rather than a retelling.
A Comic to Set the Stage
The story won’t debut on cards alone. A tie-in Marvel comic from writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly releases digitally in February 2027, giving readers two months to learn the stakes before the set launches in April. It’s a smart transmedia play: the comic builds the world, the set lets you play in it.
Why This Announcement Matters
With a launch date over five months out, Darkhold Destiny has an unusually long runway, and that means months of previews, story beats, and speculation ahead. As the first original-story Universes Beyond set, it also sets a precedent: if this model works, expect more bespoke crossover worlds rather than straight adaptations.
Mark April 7, 2027 on the calendar. This is one we’ll be covering all the way through spoiler season.
