How does Target’s Pokémon drawing work?

Shoppers sign in to a Target account, open the product page, and tap the Enter Drawing button instead of checking out. Each guest gets one entry, Target randomly selects winners after the entry window closes, and entrants get an email confirmation once they are in.

Winners are emailed starting Wednesday, November 4, and entering does not charge anything up front. Selected guests complete their purchase by the deadline shown in the winner email, so nobody is auto-charged for a product they no longer want.

What happens if you win, or if you are not picked?

Winners get a deadline to buy the blister at the $14.99 list price, and items won through the drawing cannot be returned or exchanged, according to the rules Target posts on the product page. Guests who are not selected are not shut out for good: Target says they will have another chance to buy if more inventory becomes available.

How is this different from Walmart’s Pokémon lottery?

The biggest difference is the clock. Walmart’s Pokémon drawings usually stay open for only an hour or two, while Target’s first window runs for days, from Monday, November 2 to the Wednesday, November 4 close. The longer window is meant to end the pattern Polygon describes, where Target’s weekday midnight drops sold out to bots in seconds while fans stayed up for nothing.

Will more Pokémon products use the drawing?

That is unconfirmed. The Destined Rivals blister is the only product running through the system so far, and it reads as a small test before Target decides whether high-demand releases get the same treatment. It lands in a busy stretch for the game, with the McDonald’s Happy Meal promo starting November 10 and the Mega Rayquaza ex Premium Tournament Collection on the way. Collectors are also watching the Pokémon TCG Valentine’s Box for how it will be sold in January.

If the drawing does not show up for you, Polygon notes that updating the Target app is the first fix to try.
